How to Create a Password Protected Webpage

Updated 15 Oct 2026

Password Protected Webpages can be a practical and sensible addition to a Club’s website, particularly if a Club wants to control access to some of its specific information such as events, membership information or administrator only details.

Why create a Password Protected Webpage?

There are various reasons why a club may wish to have Password Protected Webpages setup on their site, below are some common reasons:

  • Member-only content: This could be information only intended for financially paid members and not for public knowledge. Examples can include, meeting minutes, newsletters, internal announcements, member directories, etc… This can help ensure only authorised members can view the potentially sensitive information.
  • Club Governance or Legal Documents: Examples include, financial reports, bylaws, legal agreements, etc…this allows confidential or legally sensitive documents are away from public eye.
  • Work in progress or Admin pages: Examples may include planning documents, draft announcements
  • Registration or Payment Information: Pages with forms for Membership Applications, dues or event payments or donations. This can help avoid any non-members entering events or making payments.

How to create a Password Protected Webpage

When creating a new post or page, the Status of the page can be set as Password Protected by ticking the applicable box.

  1. From your post or page editor, go to the Page tab in the sidebar.
  2. Click on Public in the Visibility option.
  3. Select Password protected.
  4. Type a secure password into the field.

After you restrict the visibility of a page on your WordPress.com website or blog, all visitors to the page will be prompted to enter the password to access the page.

When viewing the list of all pages or posts in your WordPress admin area, password-protected pages will indicate their status.

Important note – How to Avoid Caching

NOTE: For password-protected pages to behave correctly, they need to be excluded from caching. – Caching is a technique where frequently accessed data is stored in a temporary storage location (the “cache”) for faster retrieval, i.e. emails and passwords used for logging into accounts.

When accessing your Club Site Dashboard, on the right-hand side navigation menu, select the Speed Optimiser > Caching

Next, find the Exlcude URLs from Caching and click the pencil icon. This will open a small window to add the URL of the Password Protected Webpage.

Paste in the remainder of the URL after the club address example here.

URLs that are cached will be linked and found here. To unlike a cached URL, click the pencil icon again and minus the URL – select the ‘-‘ icon.
